Flute

Students of the flute will study the fundamental building blocks of music through a variety of exercises, as well as their application through various studies and selections from the flute repertoire. Materials are chosen to best fit the flutist’s level of experience. Any advanced student should also consider adding the study of the piccolo in their flute lessons, too. At all stages of learning, skills for development include:

  • Tone – the cultivation of a personal sound and voice through the instrument.
  • Rhythm – the understanding of pulse and connections with the division of time.
  • Technique – the development of facility in the articulation with the tongue, coordination of the fingers, and breathing
  • Musicality – the discovery of how to interpret music, true to the composer but also to the flutist.
  • Music Theory and Music History – the foundational study of the context of music as a creative art in the scope of culture. These are the sciences and humanities of music!
  • *The Piccolo* – for students who have the desire, need, and access to a piccolo, building a relationship with this instrument is a fantastic and rewarding process in itself but also in application to and from the flute.
