Studying music is much more than just music. At the core, it certainly is the art of sound – our canvas is time through the changes we create in space. Beyond these straightforward, yet complex values, it is necessary to explore the many disciplines that make music work. Rhythm can be understood through mathematics and dance, while the mechanics of an instrument and gestures might be interpreted through sciences, such as physics. Articulation and phrasing stem from speech and the voice with musicality and “sound painting” involving the consideration of philosophy and psychology. Every work of music includes a purpose, which might be explored through history and the broader context of music.
Through additional provided resources, Justin hopes to help all musicians –taking into account prospective career aspirations – by incorporating the study and practice of music with activities that reach into other fields. This is, of course, adapted to every student’s needs and wishes, whether they might want to become a doctor, chef, or maybe even a professional musician. Music is an integral part of human life and it is worth sharing and discovering.
